Who built Diocletian’s palace?

The palace was built by the emperor so that after abdicating the throne he could enjoy the peaceful life for which he cried so much, and in his retirement he spent his time planting vegetables in the palace garden. Construction began in 295 and lasted ten years, when Diocletian took off his imperial cloak and arrived at his Dalmatian residence.

Diocletian gathered builders and masons from the Eastern Roman Empire as well as local craftsmen for the construction of the palace. All the basic materials came from the immediate vicinity. The white stone was delivered from a nearby quarry, mostly from the island of Brač, and some from Seget near Trogir.

The very performance of the construction shows an enviable technical and craftsmanship level, which is extremely impressive even for today’s modern construction methods.

After Diocletian spent his last days here, life in the palace did not stop, and the palace lives on even today after over 1,700 years of existence. In those 1700 years, the palace slowly became a city, which even today beckons with its rich tradition, magnificent history, and the beauty of its natural and cultural heritage. Numerous buildings of pre-Romanesque, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture were thus created, which together with the remains of the old Roman palace form a unique urbanistic whole of the core of the city of Split.
